Through three days at the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open, there are three names at the top, Minjee Lee, Andrea Lee and Wichanee Meechai at -5.
The round of the day was provided by the most prominent name there, two-time major champion Minjee Lee. Minjee was in neutral, until an incredible bounce on the par 5 7 gave her a tap in for eagle. From there she had three more birdies, including on the instantly infamous par 3 12. She shot -4 66 to get to a share.
Andrea Lee (above) grinded all day, not feeling particularly in the tournament compared to those around her, but a strong finish propelled her into a spot at -5. Lee birdied both 15 and 16, and limited mistakes elsewhere making her last bogey on 8.
Wichanee Meechai, the lone player with a share who has not yet won, showed what kind of competitor she is. While many of her drives where perfectly down the middle, the most impressive shots were her recoveries. She was near the hazard and 4 and in deep rough on 16, and somehow saved par on both.
Below them at the leaderboard are a pair of young Japanese major champions looking for a second LPGA victory, Yuka Saso and Hinako Shibuno at -2 and -3 respectively. Outside of those five players, it appears unlikely anybody else gets heavily into competition.
The final round will be on Peacock in the morning and NBC in the afternoon on Sunday.
