Nine of the top 10 players in the world were in the field at Lancaster Country Club this week for the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open, only one of them, Minjee Lee, is in the top 10 on the leaderboard.
No. 1 Nelly Korda, No. 6 Rose Zhang, No. 11 Brooke Henderson and No. 14 Lydia Ko all missed the +8 cut. Lexi Thompson also missed the number, while players like Celine Boutier, Jin Young Ko and Megan Khang all made the cut on the number.
The story of the first two rounds of course was the 10 by Nelly Korda on her third hole of the event. Korda battled hard after that, shooting even par Friday to finish the event at +10. She just couldn’t get her driver working in particular, hitting only 13 fairways for the two rounds. She did keep her sense of humor though, posting on her Instagram account that it was a 10/10 week.
Thompson, who announced her impending retirement on Tuesday was paired with Rose Zhang coming off a win, they shot a combined +24 though. Lydia Ko, still fighting to clinch her hall of fame spot, shot +13.
This isn’t to say that no stars are in contention, Lee and Yuka Saso are both in contention and are recent U.S. Women’s Open champions, while second-place Andrea Lee is a Solheim Cup competitor. Both Ayaka Furue and Nasa Hataoka are in the top 10, and in the discussion for best players without a major.
Lancaster is playing brutally difficult, so it is still unpredictable what will happen over the weekend.
