The No. 33 South Florida Bulls held on to win the FAU Paradise Invitational in Boca Raton Fla., despite struggles on the finishing stretch.
South Florida entered the day with a three-stroke lead over No. 53 Denver. It was a two-horse race for the title, as they plus Rutgers were the only teams under par heading into the final round. Rutgers took itself out of the tournament early on Tuesday, finishing +15 in the final round to come in a T4.
While South Florida had expanded their lead early in the round, the final two holes proved to be the Bulls’ kryptonite. USF went +5 as a team on 17 and 18, and at one point the lead had been cut to one stroke.
In the end, the Bulls finished with a 4-stroke victory, shooting -7 for the tournament overall. Three of the Bulls finished under par for the tournament led by individual champion, senior Melanie Green’s -6 210. Green saved the Bulls at the end, with a birdie on the 18th hole that gave her team so many struggles. That birdie along with a bogey from Denver’s top player, graduate Anna Zanusso, sealed the Bulls victory.
The Bulls next play in the Wisconsin hosted Westbrook Invitational in Peoria Ariz.
