So Mi Lee arrived at Liberty National today probably expecting not to play. But with a large group of players withdrawing, her name was called. She took advantage.
World No. 17 Maja Stark was the fourth player to withdraw from the Mizuho Americas Open on Thursday, thus putting the second alternate So Mi Lee in the competition. Lee is the No. 78 ranked player in the world.
Lee didn’t let the sudden pressure get to her, shooting a -6 66, taking a two-stroke lead over a large group of other players at -4. In six starts this year, Lee has made only two cuts, but placed in the top 20 in the other two events.
Lee had eight birdies with two bogeys on her way to a season-low score. She hit 12 fairways and 13 greens, while having a staggering 24 putts.
Sometimes a sudden change can alleviate pressure on a round, it will be interesting to see how she responds to the high expectations she will have leading into the second round.
