A five-stroke victory doesn’t even seem to do Lauren Coughlin’s incredible performance at the Aramco Championship justice as she absolutely lapped the field all week.
Coughlin came into the day holding a two-stroke lead over Nelly Korda, but thanks to a good front nine and a poor front from Korda, her lead ballooned to six around the turn.
Coughlin did make a couple of bogeys early on the front nine that put Korda and Leona Maguire within reasonable striking range. Korda couldn’t make any kind of moves though, making her first birdie on the final hole of the tournament. Korda becomes the first player since 2006 to finish runner up three weeks in a row on the LPGA Tour.
The key to Coughlin’s victory was keeping away from making big mistakes. There were scores to be had on Shadow Creek, but everyone seemingly made a fatal mistake other than Coughlin. She didn’t make a single double bogey all week.
Coughlin cruised on to victory with smart play and a lot of pars. She didn’t make a lot of moves on the back, but she didn’t need to, she just needed that same consistency and elite putting she had all week.
This is now the third win of Lauren Coughlin’s career, and will move her firmly within the Solheim Cup standings. Though Angela Stanford confirmed today via the broadcast, that she would be an easy pick anyway.
The LPGA Tour takes next week off before a trip to Los Angeles, which then leads into the first major of the year at Chevron.
