Two of the LPGA Tour’s winningest active players are tied for the 54-hole lead at the CPKC Women’s Open played near Toronto.
Henderson, the home country favorite, continued her rapid rise up the leaderboard after a tough start on Thursday. Henderson went through the front nine with a -2 33, but was much more explosive after making the turn.
After making a birdie on 12 and a bogey on 14, the fireworks began with birdies on 15 and 16. On the drivable par 4 17, Henderson hit her shot into the green side bunker. She then hit a beautiful bunker shot that trickled perfectly into the hole for eagle. She then made a par on 18 to finish up at -6 for the day, -11 for the tournament.
Lee had a quieter day for the most part. A chip-in birdie on 8 got her round kicked into gear. After a bogey on 11, Lee buried a long eagle putt on the par 5 12. After some pars, Lee hit a gorgeous tee shot onto the 17 green, and hit an easy putt for eagle. On 18, after a bad tee shot and a below average approach, Lee had another chip-in for par to finish it out with a share of the lead.
Lee and Henderson have a combined five majors and 24 wins, setting up a superstar showdown on Sunday.
Not far behind are world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul and last week’s winner Akie Iwai. Iwai came into the round with the lead, but struggled a bit Saturday while dealing with a bit of illness. They are each three strokes back at -8 for the tournament.
