Lauren Coughlin is dominating early at the Chevron Championship in Houston, holding on to a two-stroke lead in the morning wave.
The season’s first major will probably have an unlikely first round leader in Lauren Coughlin, as the general belief is the morning round players will score better. Coughlin hasn’t yet won on the LPGA Tour, but she has a long history of strong play.
Coughlin had a terrific career at Virginia, which included two ACC player of the year awards while being voted as an all-american. Just this year, she played fantastic at the Ford Championship, gaining her first top-10 finish of her LPGA career.
Here at Chevron, she shot -6 with six birdies and no over par holes. She hit 13/14 fairways, 14 greens in regulation and only had 26 putts. Her driving distance was high as well, averaging 281 yards off the tee.
There’s a lot of time left in this major championship, but it is unlikely there will be many better rounds this week.
