The Grant Thornton Invitational has announced the first confirmed teams for the second annual playing of the event.
The Grant Thornton Invitational pairs the best players on the LPGA Tour and the PGA Tour in a groundbreaking format played in December at Tiburón Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
The first three teams, announced on the tournament’s Instagram page, are all returning teams from the 2023 event. Playing in the Grant Thornton Invitational in 2024 will be Lydia Ko and Jason Day, Lexi Thompson and Rickie Fowler and Nelly Korda and Tony Finau.
Ko and Day won the event in 2023. The two short game wizard major champions from Australia and New Zealand were a no-brainer to team up again. They are the modern-day icons from the region and their win felt like a wake-up call for each of their games.
Thompson and Fowler initially weren’t supposed to play in 2023, Fowler was going to team up with Jessica Korda before her pregnancy was announced. Thompson was always an easy replacement though considering how many sponsors the two share, including Puma. The two tied for sixth in 2023, and this may be one of the last times we see Lexi Thompson playing in a professional tournament.
Finau and Nelly, likewise are an easy pairing. Aside from both being American long hitters, you may see them often sharing the screen on T-Mobile commercials. Both are also Nike and Grant Thornton athletes who seemingly enjoyed their time together last year. The two finished in fourth place in 2023.
More teams surely will be announced in the coming months leading up to the only crossover event between the two highest level tours in the world.
