Curtis Cup session 1 is in the books, here are some of the takeaways from the action so far
- This was a good, if not ideal result for the United States. They do enter the second session with a lead, but this is the format they should do well in.
- GB&I did some really good work out there, winning a point and fighting back hard in the other two matches. Neither of the two matches they lost should’ve made it as far as they did.
- Asterisk Talley was unbelievably impressive, particularly early in the round. She was hitting shots close consistently including some big ones on 7, 8 and 10, converting them all for birdie. Her and Romero make a powerful, and solid team that we should see more throughout the next two days.
- Sophia Fullbrook and Patience Rhodes got off to a massive start but had some big scares coming at times. The match was 5UP GB&I early, but Anna Davis and Kelly Xu did a good job at fighting back. Xu had some bad chips late that probably prevented them completing the comeback, but there are some encouraging signs to be had.
- Farrah O’Keefe clearly is the center of energy for this United States squad. She made an eagle on the first hole and had the biggest fist pump of the day. She kept that energy even when Charlotte Naughton and Nellie Ong made a bit of a charge. She finished the round with a real nice birdie with a long putt.
- The length of this United States team is easily apparent, particularly from its top players O’Keefe, Romero and Talley. That is a storyline to look out for.
- Both teams need to get 1.5 points in the afternoon foursomes to consider this day a success. Traditionally, European teams have advantages in foursomes, it will be intriguing to see if that holds up here.
