When Ally Ewing putts well, she is in strong contention to win. Though she has just three titles on the LPGA Tour, she is still known as one of the best ball strikers in the women’s game. When every aspect connects though, she can be one of the best in the world.
On Saturday at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, it was surprisingly her putting that saved her, and propelled her into contention.
Ewing shot a -4 68 on Saturday, punctuated by a great birdie on 18. On that hole, she hit a great breaking putt that fell right into the center of the cup to bring her to -5 for the round, -8 overall.
In total, Ewing only hit 12 greens in regulation, down from her previous rounds of 14 each day. But she only had an 26 putts on the day and converted her one sand save.
Ewing’s average driving distance came down on Saturday from around 261 for the week to 249, evidence of the tough conditions, but she grinded through her round to shoot by far her best score of the event.
Ewing has been a strong player for the last five years, evidenced by making the last five Solheim Cup teams. If she can continue this level of play, mark it down for four in a row in 2024.
