The Solheim Cup teams are all set with the finalization of the American team Monday. Over the next two weeks leading into the competition, we will rank all 24 players in the Solheim Cup for both teams, continuing today with Angel Yin:
The most unique and hardest player to rank this year is Angel Yin. If there were no extenuating circumstances, Yin would rank far higher than 22, almost definitely top 10. But the question marks surrounding Yin are concerning because, she may not even play.
Yin hasn’t played this year since she withdrew from the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. That was all the way back in June. She’s missed two majors and five events overall in that timeframe. The last time she played all four rounds in an individual event was the first week of May.
There’s little known about Yin’s situation, other than it is non-injury related and she has been in contact with Angela Stanford about her status. We did get some updates yesterday thanks to Beth Ann Nichols who talked to Yin in Boston. Yin had a stomach illness that caused her to lose over 30 pounds.
Even if she can go, what will her form be like? How many rounds will she be able to play? Will she be able to go all the way through Sunday? What will her strength be like?
Before her absence, she was playing well. She made 10 cuts in 11 starts and had three top-10 finishes. On an American team lacking major star power outside of Nelly Korda, she may be the player who many have the most week-to-week confidence in. That is why, despite the reality that she may not play, she still isn’t at the bottom of this list.
Yin is one of the best and most aggressive putters on the Tour. She also possesses good power, though she has lost some in recent years and is a bit wild off the tee. Yin plays with a fearlessness though that benefits her in these types of competition.
This will be Yin’s fourth time in the Solheim Cup, where she has built a strong 5-3-1 record. She was fantastic, going 3-1-1 at the International Crown and really feeling like the team leader. Her partnership with Yealimi Noh in particular was phenomenal.
Angel Yin is one of the best players on the United States team in a vacuum. The current status raises enough questions though to keep her this low. If she plays well in Boston and is good to go, she is a much higher ranked player than this.
