Three of the LPGA’s biggest superstars, Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson and Lydia Ko, are all in contention with fascinating storylines going into Sunday at the Ford Championship.
The windy conditions of Saturday’s third round brought more players into contention, with the lead moving from -14 to only -15. This has resulted in a bunched leaderboard with 15 players within two strokes.
Korda is looking to become the first LPGA player since Ariya Jutanugarn in 2016 to win three consecutive starts on the tour. Also in the lead on the PGA Tour going into Sunday is Scottie Scheffler, who like Korda is an American world No. 1 looking for a third win in a row. It would be quite the story for both of them to pull off the victories.
The mission for Ko is simple, win and in. The LPGA Hall of Fame that is. With a win, Ko joins the prestigious list of golfers to make the LPGA Hall of Fame at only 26-years-old.
Thompson is looking for a big time comeback after her worst season on tour in 2023. Lexi hasn’t won on the LPGA Tour since 2019 and finished No. 79 in the CME Standings last season. An early win would payoff a strong last few months for Thompson, where her game has certainly trended upwards.
These three superstars are all two back, and have to chase down three formidable players, Carlota Ciganda, Hyo Joo Kim and Sarah Schmelzel. But, I wouldn’t want to see any of them chasing.
