The final groups of the day are just finishing up at the 2025 AIG Women’s Open, here’s a rundown of some of the most notable storylines to emerge from the opening round:
- In Gee Chun, the three-time major champion, quietly put together one of the rounds of the day. She sits at -3 after the first round despite being +1 thru eight holes early on. She made some bogeys around the turn and survived on the difficult finish to be just two strokes back. Chun is looking to complete the career grand slam this week despite her last top-10 finish coming in August, 2023.
- Nelly Korda looked to be in the same form she has been for much of the season, which is likely a relief and frustrating for the No. 1 player in the world. Korda’s ball striking was a bit all over the place but even when she was in good birdie position, she missed some scoring opportunities. She did scramble well though, making some really nice par putts and she currently sits at -2, just three shots off the lead. This is a round that could’ve gone a lot of different directions, so all in all, staying in firm contention is a success.
- Lottie Woad showed a bit less dominance in this opening round compared to her recent play. Her ball striking was average at best for her standards, but she still hit some very solid putts to keep herself somewhat in contention at even par.
- Jeeno Thitikul and Minjee Lee were both going along very well in the early wave, but hit some struggles on the difficult finish, each making two bogeys. They sit at -2 though and played in some of the worse conditions on the day.
- Lilia Vu’s final score may not show it, but she looked the best she has since March through most of the round. Vu made four early bogeys and looked to be completely out of it early on, but recovered with birdies on 9, 10 and 15. A double bogey on 16 put her back over par and her putter is not up to her lofty standards, but she should find some solid momentum here.
- Hannah Green’s 2025 struggles continued with a +7 score that really ended her chances at a win this week. Green is now +31 in her last seven rounds and hasn’t shot under par in any of them.
