With just a few players left to finish up their second rounds at the Riviera Maya Open, Nelly Korda has joined the lead along with Brianna Do.
Korda continued her red-hot form into Friday, after shooting a solid -4 68 on day one. She followed that up in the second round with a -5 67 that was bogey-free for the player who leads the Tour in bogey avoidance.
That isn’t all Korda leads the Tour in, with other stats she’s at the top of the leaderboard in including strokes gained, strokes gained tee-to-green, strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained approach and scoring average.
Thursday’s round was one where Korda’s short game saved some pretty poor for her standards ball striking, but Friday was a different story. Korda hit 16 greens compared to her 10 the day before. While she’s still missing a little over half her fairways for the week, that isn’t a huge deal on this course.
Korda is looking for her third win of the season in only six starts, which would get her one step closer to what feels like an almost inevitable LPGA Player of the Year win.
On the flip side, Brianna Do brings a bit less experience with the lead to this unique pairing. The 36-year-old is looking for just her second career top-10 finish after her ninth place finish in this event last year.
Do stayed poised though and didn’t let the pressure creep in too much, making four birdies in the first 11 holes, before ending off the round with six pars and a bogey to finish.
The two sit tied now, and Do will have to wrestle with facing the biggest star in the sport in the same group, searching for what would be a life and career altering win.
