Minjee Lee, the third highest ranked player in the field at the JM Eagle LA Championship, withdrew prior to the second round Friday morning.
Lee had a fantastic front nine in her first round, getting to -4 thru nine and looking like she was in good position to make a run at the lead, but with the tougher late afternoon conditions, she shot +1 on the back to finish up six strokes back of the lead.
Lee is ranked No. 6 in the Rolex Rankings and was one of the biggest draws in the field, being behind just Hyo Joo Kim and Miyu Yamashita. A reason has not yet been given for Lee’s dropping out.
If she is in the field next week at the first major championship of the season, Lee will be attempting to achieve the LPGA grand slam by winning her fourth unique major.
The field at the JM Eagle LA Championship is a bit weaker than an average LPGA Tour event thanks in large part to the presence of the major next week. With bad weather in the forecast all week in Houston, it makes sense that players may want a head start in getting some practice in.
Jin Young Ko and defending champion Ingrid Lindblad are now playing in a group of two Friday.
