After a chaotic, not always pretty, final round at the T-Mobile Match Play at Shadow Creek, Madelene Sagström won over Lauren Coughlin, 1 up in 18 holes.
Sagström got off to a hot start, going up 4 through only six holes. It certainly wasn’t over though, as Coughlin has shown throughout this tournament, and her career, she is an all-time grinder.
Sagström hit some significant troubles in the middle of her round, particularly off the tee, a place she usually excels as a player. Coughlin brought the match back to tied and eventually led early in the back nine. The match was tied through hole 15, where both players hit some significant short game struggles.
Sagström took the lead on 16, and followed that up with a brilliant chip shot on 17 to put herself in pole position going into 18. After a subpar tee shot on 18, she hit a great approach to essentially seal the win.
This is the second win of Sagström’s career. It is her first win since just before the Covid-19 pandemic. She went 7-0 in matches this week, putting together an impressive performance for Anna Nordqvist to think about when it comes to the 2026 Solheim Cup. Sagström has been on four of the last five teams but hasn’t always been the most consistent performer. After this week though, she looks like a potentially key player for Europe.
