The fourth women’s golf major of the year is taking place this week, and once again one of the biggest stars on the tour will not be participating.
This isn’t shocking news, the last time Thompson played in the Evian Championship was 2019, she has been the biggest name seemingly opposed to the tournament.
In recent years, Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis has also not played in the LPGA’s newest major. This year, the two Olympic qualifiers from China, Ruoning Yin and Xiyu Lin are not playing. Both are top 15 players in the world who are taking a major championship week off.
In a now deleted Instagram post from 2019, the last time Thompson played in the Evian, she wrote:
“I’m actually thankful that I don’t have to put myself through that for another two days. You’re a beautiful place Evian but that’s just too many bad breaks with good shots for me, so bye.”
The Evian Championship is known for being a tricky, and often unlucky, golf course. Still, it is somewhat surprising to see Thompson skip a major championship in her last full season on tour.
