The story of the second round of the Fortinet Founders Cup, played at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club in Menlo Park, California, was much the same as the first, veteran Hyo Joo Kim.
The seven-time LPGA Tour winner Kim battled the tougher of the two draws Friday, but with her dominant first round lead after a 63 on Thursday, it was no problem.
Kim, going off on the back nine Friday, did struggle a bit early, with two bogeys on the first seven holes, but got one stroke back before making the turn, with a birdie on the par 5 18. Kim really found her rhythm on her second nine, where she made two birdies on the first three holes. She found one more coming in on the par 3 eighth hole to finish up at -2 70.
Though Kim’s putting numbers where higher Friday, after an incredible feat of only having 22 Thursday, she still looked very solid on the greens, particularly on the back nine. She also kept the ball out of trouble, as she is known to do, with 12 hit fairways.
While three-time LPGA Tour winner Gaby López is Kim’s closest competitor at -7, four strokes back, there is a host of superstars chasing, highlighted by world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul and world No. 2 Nelly Korda, who both sit at -6.
The third round of the Fortinet Founders Cup kicks off on Golf Channel at 6:00 PM eastern.
