Gaby Lopez is no stranger to playing well at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. That dominance continued in the opening round of 2024.
Lopez has a documented history of playing well in this event, and was recently named one of the power five for this tournament. In her four previous appearances Lopez has never finished outside of the top 11. Her three top-10s include a third place finish in 2022 and a thrilling playoff win in 2020.
In this first round, Lopez was off to a blazing start, with birdies on five of her first six holes. Her game cooled from there, going even on the final 12. Lopez bogeyed her 15th and 16th holes to drop to -4 for the round before hitting a long putt on the ninth hole for birdie, her last hole of the day.
Lopez hit only nine fairways in the opening round, but did her damage on approach shots, hitting 17 greens in regulation. Ho hum day on the greens with 30 putts, but some clutch ones for birdie.
Lopez’s history in this format gives reason to be optimistic about her continued good play at Lake Nona. She currently sits just two shots behind leader Ayaka Furue.
