It has been a busy year for LPGA Tour retirements, as Lexi Thompson, Ally Ewing, Angela Stanford, Brittany Lincicome and So Yeon Ryu have all called it a career playing full time on tour. Now, Marina Alex joins that group.
Alex, the 34-year-old from New Jersey, made it official at the CME Group Tour Championship, an event she had to play well down the stretch to get into the field for. After seeing Suzann Pettersen go out on top at the Solheim Cup, Alex always envisioned something similar for hersel. Some of the best golf of her career in late 2024 added to the decision.
“I think that I wanted to end my career in the most positive way that I could. This is something I’ve been thinking about for a bit. It’s not — to those who are close to me probably not a surprise,” said Alex.
Alex is a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour, the 2018 Portland Classic and the 2022 Palos Verdes Championship. She played in her only Solheim Cup in 2019, where she was on the other end of Pettersen winning the clinching point. Alex’s best finish in a major was in her first season on tour, a T9 at the AIG Women’s Open.
In 2024, Alex had five top-10 finishes, including two on the October Asian swing. She nearly got one final victory at the Toto Japan Classic, where she fell to Rio Takeda in a six-hole playoff.
