At the 2026 Meijer LPGA Classic held at Blythefield Country Club in Michigan, Kiara Romero is playing for a lot more than just a high finish or first LPGA Tour victory, she is playing for LPGA Tour status.
Romero, the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world has had a whirlwind last couple weeks. First, she finished low amateur and in the top 10 at the U.S. Women’s Open at The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. Then, the very next week, she went 3-1 at the Curtis Cup, helping to lead the United States to a victory of Great Britain & Ireland.
This week, she is in the field at the Meijer LPGA Classic, looking to lock up LPGA Tour status.
The LPGA Tour’s LEAP program was recently established to give the top amateurs in the world a more direct path to the highest level. If a player accumulates 20 points, they will gain priority exemption status.
Romero is currently at 18 points. If she finishes top 40 this week at Meijer, she will gain one point. If she finishes in the top 10, she will gain two points. If she finishes top 40, she will inevitably get that point once she plays on the Arnold Palmer Cup team, which gives her one more point.
If she does accomplish it this week, she will have three options. She can gain immediate membership, which will expire at the end of the season. She can defer it until July 1, and gain status for all this year and next season. Or she can defer it to next season, where it will expire at the end of the year.
All of these expiration dates, of course, can be taken away depending on the level of play that Romero shows. Lottie Woad qualified through this program last year and now has two wins, and is in no danger of losing her status any time soon.
Romero finished the first round with an even par score and currently sits near the cut line. She is just two strokes away from being in the top 40 though.
