A scary and bizarre situation this weekend led to Epson Tour star Amari Avery having to use Gabi Ruffels’ clubs in the second round of the U.S. Women’s Open.
The chaotic series of events was set off on Thursday, when someone tried to break into Avery’s rental home, forcing the 20-year-old to pack up and move to a hotel. When she did so, she and her boyfriend, USC outgoing senior Gavin Aurilia packed their golf clubs into travel bags.
The biggest issue? The travel bags were nearly identical.
Aurilia needed to leave to play in a tournament of his own and accidentally flew away from southern Wisconsin with Avery’s clubs ahead of round two.
Gabi Ruffels, who proceeded Avery on the USC women’s golf team by two years, came to the rescue, lending Avery her visor and clubs for the second round. They were playing on opposite ends of the morning/afternoon draw and Ruffels missed the cut after shooting +6 on Friday.
Avery played pretty well with them, shooting even par on 16 holes and, for the moment, sitting inside the cut line at -1 for the week. She still has two holes to complete Saturday morning.
Golf Digest reported that Avery’s clubs were in transit with Aurilia’s mom Friday and were expected to arrive for the weekend.
